What happens in somatic therapy?

You will receive listening, empathy & compassion, but also guidance in mindfulness & embodiment, as well as both psychological & physical exercises.

We may begin with dialog over what is happening in your life on that day or week, and associations may arise to significant and/or traumatic past events, just like in traditional therapy. However, rather than remain on the level of language- or even image/symbol-based thinking, we dive into feelings, sensations, and the physiological responses to the processes of the mind.

Over time, we help you develop the Somatic skills & tools to regulate your nervous system during challenging or triggering experiences & emotions, whether brought on by painful memories, traumatic events, relationship challenges or physical pain.

Additionally, we will provide guidance for appropriate lifestyle changes and practices ranging from nutrition, sleep habits, movement modalities, meditation, breathwork, self-massage, language skills and more, as appropriate for your needs and authentic to your self-expression. We support you in learning how to better support yourself.

Drawing from traditional therapeutic modalities,
as well as from the worlds of:

  • Ayurveda
  • Yoga
  • Vipassana
  • Chinese medicine & Chigong

Yehoshua Shy Sayar, Director

Languages available: English, Hebrew

After a childhood defined by war, bullying and domestic violence, Yehoshua Shy Sayar found profound relief and refuge in Somatic Therapy, and has since devoted his life to helping others find peace and happiness as well. In his doctoral work at UC Berkeley, he studied psychology, analysis and symptomatic reading, but it was even more through his decades of studying and teaching yoga, Chi Gong, meditation and the teachings of Buddhist psychology, as well as his work as director of tantravayayoga.com, that he developed his uniquely powerful & effective approach to somatic therapy. Yehoshua specializes in helping adults & adolescentes address all forms of mental suffering, chronic pain and self-destructive patterns, as well as working with couples on developing the skills to nourish healthy relationships. His sessions integrate mindfulness and breathing techniques, movement practices and Ayurvedic methods into the therapeutic dialogue, as well as the greater perspective of lifestyle guidance – from nutrition and sleep habits to self-care and relationship skills. He prides himself most on being a loving partner and father, and an active, compassionate listener.

For the past two decades Joshua has been facilitating and supporting deep transformational work both with individuals and in groups.

Through deep listening, inquiry, and reflection he helps gently guide a person towards their own clarity, insight and authentic direction. Helping a person disentangle from conflicting emotions, thoughts, beliefs and life choices – and re-align on all levels with their deepest truth / clarity.

He provides perspective as well as practical tools to create greater balance, harmony and integration of the past that may limit the ability to feel and be healthy, happy, and whole.
